Starting any new endeavor can be a bit nerve-wracking because it’s something you know very little about.  When it comes to ballet, the number of questions you can ask yourself as a beginner can fill a whole list. If it’s your first class, or even if it isn’t, but you just want to refresh your memory, it’s a good exercise to think of all the ways you can prepare for your sessions. Get yourself ready for your first ballet class in Singapore by learning a few things about ballet!

What is ballet?
Ballet’s origin is steeped in history. It’s a Baroque era court dance, an artistic and highly regarded art form using very precise, complex foot movements and gestures. Classical ballet has been around for centuries, getting its beginnings in Renaissance-era Italy and quickly taking off in other parts of the globe. Modern ballet now can be recognized with its quick series of light and airy movements, and a distinct attire that most people will recognize.

Ballet dance workouts are meant to be elegant and sophisticated. You can see traces of this in the art form itself, where even your classes and performances adhere to high standards when it comes to courtesy and respect. There are many unwritten rules when it comes to ballet dancing: let’s see a few tips and things to keep in mind.

Preparing for ballet lessons

  1. Show respect to your teachers and fellow dancers. Remember to go to your class on time! If tardiness is unavoidable, don’t interrupt the class with your entrance. Find an unobtrusive space and do your warm-ups before joining.
  2. Dress in a neat but comfortable attire. Pay attention to the dress code. You might be required to wear a leotard and ballet shoes. Some places are more strict than others.
  3. Don’t forget other supplies. Water bottles for rest breaks and hairnets or pins to secure your hair are essential for practice. Don’t forget them.
