When I was a kid, I often suffer from eczema. I thought I have already outgrown this when I reached adulthood because it stopped occurring during middle school. I was surprised to find that my eczema came back when I graduated from college and started working in a corporate office.

At first, I thought the red rashes on in between the fingers are just insect bites. Eventually, I noticed that the skin around the rashes became thick and scaly. Plus, there were some open wounds that appeared around it. I got alarmed because the same thing happened at some areas on my face and on my knees. It felt too itchy that I always have this urge to scratch it all over again. But whenever I do, the rash would become worse and the affected area would swell and become more inflamed. I felt so uncomfortable that I can’t concentrate on work anymore so I filed a leave and consulted a doctor about it.

Consultation

Thanks to a close friend of mine, I found a doctor who could help me treat this horrible skin condition. When I consulted her, I found out that the eczema that I had when I was a little kid came back. Unfortunately, it worsened and flares occurred because I haven’t been using mild bath products, and I haven’t been moisturising my skin daily. Stress could also be a factor so she advised me to take a few days off from work.

Treatment

She told me to practice the daily maintenance care routine that she will be giving, and she prescribed steroid creams or ointments to get rid of the eczema flares. As for the eczema flares on my face, she suggested applying calcineurin inhibitor creams on it.

Part of the routine includes using soap-free body wash and lukewarm water while showering. Next, I had to use a non-fragranced moisturiser and apply it on the affected areas. After that, I’d use the steroid creams on the fingers and at the back of the knees, and then the calcineurin inhibitor on the face. I did this religiously for a week and it worked! The red, scaly rashes were almost gone and they don’t feel irritating and painful anymore on the skin. I was really glad that there weren’t oozing discharges anymore on the affected areas.

I went back to my doctor for another checkup. When she examined it, she told me that there was still some infection left but it will soon go away in just a few days. I just need to continue the daily maintenance care routine because skin conditions like eczema will keep on coming back if I do not always make sure that my skin is moisturised.
