Types of Hearing Aids

Finding the correct type of hearing aid for your needs depends on the degree of your hearing loss, lifestyle preferences and cosmetic concerns. About 63.7% of the elderly population have hearing loss in Singapore. Here are two basic types of hearing aids that are available in the market for any hearing impairment.

In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

Patients wear ITE aids inside the ear. It is custom-fit based on the impression taken by a hearing care professional at the time of a patient's consultation. ITE aids are available in different skin tones to blend with the outer ear. Some ITE aids fit deep within the ear canal while others sit closer to the outer ear.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

BTE aids sit either behind or on top of the outer ear. It has tubing that routes the sound down into the ear canal through a custom-fit earmold. There is also a dome-style that does not block the entire ear canal opening. You can buy BTE aids in different colours to match your hair or skin. Manufacturers also released flashier styles for a personalised flair.

Both ITEs and BTEs come with standard button batteries that need replacing from three to twenty days. However, more and more models came out with rechargeable batteries. Each hearing aid you buy from a Singapore clinic will vary in price, depending on the style and customisation done.

Limited Activities with Hearing Impairment

BTE devices with earmolds are more suitable for homebound people, patients with restricted daily activities, or those who have cognitive impairments. You can select earmolds made out of soft, flexible materials to help them fit properly in the ear. It can also make it easy for the person’s caretaker to assist. There are also assistive listening devices that can be considered.

The Hearing Solution Group offers an online hearing test for people that have schedules or circumstances that don’t allow them to visit the clinic for initial tests. They aim to provide complete hearing and communication healthcare to Singapore citizens. Call them now to schedule an appointment.
